TikTok has become the most persuasive way to promote products. Influencers create new “Things TikTok made me buy” videos every day, and the 1.67+ billion users on TikTok sell out the products being advertised within hours after the upload. What users don’t know, however, is that not all products are made equally, and the overconsumption online shopping creates is much more harmful than they think.
Girls Greater Good is a non-profit organization dedicated to informing users of the negative impact overconsumption has on our environment and community. Our thought process behind this website began after a group discussion made us realize we spend an excessive amount of time on social media and online shopping. What seems cute and trendy in the moment, however, may have environmental consequences in the future. Fast fashion companies like Shein are very popular on social media, and after doing a bit of research, we were shocked to see how poorly mistreated their employees are. Furthermore, we also addressed the craziness of trending products and how unobtainable they are once they become everyone’s new favorite item. Some of the most trending products, however, are very expensive and poorly manufactured. As a result, we decided that a bigger conversation needs to be had about what we buy and why we buy it.
